Adult Programs:

Sail Canada Start Keelboat Sailing

This is one of the entry levels in the series of Sail Canada courses on sailing keelboats and on cruising. This course is the recommended starting point for individuals with minimal practical on water experience. This entry level course builds basic sailing skills with a focus on operation of the vessel as crew. Candidates completing this course will be able to competently contribute as crew to the operation of a keelboat in moderate daytime conditions. This standard is recommended for those with little boating or sailing experience that want to experience sailing on a keelboat and begin to build basic sailing skills in a relaxed environment and at a comfortable pace.  - From Sail Canada

*Rain Dates: If for any reason we need to cancel one of the listed course dates, that session will be rescheduled for one of the rain dates provided above. Reasons we may need to cancel a session include, but are not limited to, inappropriate weather conditions, instructor availability, or special events at the club. Sailors are expected to be available for all course dates and rain dates, though every effort will be made to select a rain date that fits the schedule of the participants.  If we must move a session to a rain date, and a sailor is unavailable, no refunds will be provided.


Adult 420 - CANSail 1&2

This course, taught in C420 Dinghies, will teach fundamental sailing skills such as basic sheeting, steering, and the points of sail. This program is 4 weeks long, and meets twice a week for 3 hours. The class sizes are small, to allow for very hands on learning.  This course follows the CANSail 1 & 2 curriculum.

Note: On average, it takes a full session for a sailor to achieve one CANSail level. It is a skill based evaluation, so some sailors may require more time.

Adult 420 - CANSail 3&4

We will be offering a CANSAIL 3&4 Program for Adult 420 sailors on an as requested basis. This course, taught in C420 Dinghies, will focus on refining skills from CANSail 1&2, such as sheeting and boat handling while also introducing sailors to racing concepts. This program is 4 weeks long, and meets twice a week for 3 hours. The class sizes are small, to allow for very hands on learning.  This course follows the CANSail 3 & 4 curriculum.

If you have achieved your CANSail 2 and are interesting in expanding your knowledge, reach out to our Head Coach to learn more and schedule a sesion.  The cost of this program is $475.  


Sail Canada Basic Cruising

This is one of the entry level courses in the series of Sail Canada courses on sailing keelboats and on cruising. It develops the student’s ability to take command of and operate (with assistance of competent crew) an auxiliary powered sailing vessel, by day, in light to moderate conditions. Basic boating skills are developed under sail and power with a focus on operation of the vessel as both crew and skipper.  - From Sail Canada

This program takes place over 2 weekends. Course is taught on a J24 Sailboat. There is a required textbook "Basic Cruising Skills" for this course which can be purchased from us for $25. Successful completion of an exam is required to achieve the Basic Cruising Standard. Participants who are successful in achieving the Basic Cruising Standard will also receive their Pleasure Craft Operators Card. Click here to view full course outline.

Successful completion of Sail Canada Start Keelboat Sailing, or equivalent sailing experience, is a prerequisite for this course. If you have not completed your Start Keeboat Sailing at BBYC, you will be contacted to verify you meet this requirement. If you are unsure whether you are sailing at the required level, please reach out to lts@bbyc.ca before registering.  The cost of the program is $725

The Basic Cruising program requires a minimum of 4 students.  The schedule is flexible so please reach out to lts@bbyc.ca to discuss a time if you're interested in taking this program.

A Taste of Sailing

This year we will be holding hour introductory session for new sailors. 

 Embark on an exhilarating adventure on the waters of Bedford Basin with our 3-hour introductory sailing session aboard a J24. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a complete novice, this casual experience requires no prior experience – just a willingness to learn and a sense of adventure!

During our time together, you'll have the opportunity to hoist the sails, learn the basics of tacking and gybing, and perhaps even take the helm if you feel confident. Our experienced instructors will guide you every step of the way, ensuring a safe and enjoyable outing for everyone.

With the picturesque Bedford Basin as our backdrop, you'll enjpy the beauty of the surroundings as you glide through the water. Feel free to participate as much or as little as you like – this experience is all about having fun and soaking in the joys of sailing.

Grab your friends and join us for an unforgettable journey on the water. Don't worry if you're flying solo – we welcome individual participants and will pair you up with fellow sailing enthusiasts. The times are flexible, so pack a snack and a lifejacket, bring your sense of adventure, and let's set sail together!  The cost is $150 per person.

ADULT PRIVATE LESSONS

Have a tough schedule or very particular goals?

BBYC can create a specific lesson plan for you based on your unique sailing goals.  We can also assist you by teaching you on your own boat rather than a club boat.  Our instructors are available to teach any skills you might need, either in the classroom or on-the-water. Private lessons are ideal for those individuals or families that want special attention or have limited time availability.  Contact the Head Instructor here for additional information on private lessons.
